The Colossus, a return

To listen to RJD2s "The Colossus," is to take yourself back to a time when we listened to funk, took acid, and thought about things. Other than completely liking this album; the only thing I could think of the first time I listened to this album was being on the love boat on acid. With all of its spacey and all around big sound, taking us through the sad and gloomy like a bright yellow umbrella. It's as if RJ has completed some ten year arc that he started with 'Silverfox' and consequentially his debut album "The Horror", ultimately putting you back where it all. Do, re, mi etc.
"The Colossus" starts off strong with the Ronsonesque 'Let there be horns', a frantic drum driven horn frenzy to let know that even if your acid hasn't kicked in your senses are still gonna get a good work out and that this isn't the time to get a nap. If I had to pick; 'The Glow' would have to be the track that best sums up what you're gonna be listening to for the next hour or so. a sunny look at the good life. Beaches, cabanas, yachts and mimosas. Or for my Brooklyn cats; Roof decks, skyline sunsets and sparks. This whole album in general being a sunnier departure from the gloomier "Third Hand" album; the brilliant part being a the lack of compromise to RJ's integrity. 'A Spaceship for Now' should be a real pleasure for you "Endtroducing" fans; a deep, dark instrumental movement of warm horns and drum hits galore. After this RJ takes a little departure through the darker parts life for the next few; the cynical soul sounds of ' shining path' and 'crumbs off the table' and with a nod back at defjux 'A Son's Cycle'; a VERY RJ hip-hop slice about making it and losing it with Catalyst, Illogical & NP; dark, moving and very tightly done on all fronts. bringing up the rear we're back into the peppy horns of 'walk with me' and if you let it run out we get a little taste of that goodness that was his first album, not much just a few bars of that killer kind of down beat to let us know where it all started.
